Great experience today listening to Governor Wes Moore, who was featured on Maryland Public Television’s Examining Education town hall show. Gratitude to Travis Mitchell for the opportunity. Several key points about Maryland’s desired outcomes in education resonated with me.1. Identify scaleable “best practices” for the implications of the pandemic on learning.2. Invest in career pathways to ensure all graduates are positioned for economic success.3. Marylanders deserve a 21st-century educational system, which means improved school facilities conducive to quality educational experiences.Another critical area discussed was school safety. It was quoted that 65% of guns are trafficked into Baltimore. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s Corporate Internship Program provides life changing experiences that translate to momentum for scholars in Baltimore City. An investment in Cristo Rey is an investment in the future of Baltimore. #CherishandChallenge #CollectivePresence #cristorey John Busse Susan Lynch Leigh Profit, CPA Patricia Hill

As part of my annual spring tour of colleges, this past week I visited Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. I'd lived in Bennington briefly about 20 years ago, but had never actually visited Bennington College until this year. Bennington is a small college of about 730 students with a charming campus filled with eclectic and thoughtfully constructed learning and living spaces. What stands out to me most about Bennington is its innovative curriculum. Rather than declare a traditional major, Bennington students develop an academic plan focusing on a single, challenging, often interdisciplinary intellectual problem or question. Students then embark upon an ambitious research process, including multiple internships, classes, and tutorials, culminating in a 30-60 page research paper as well as some sort of public-facing presentation or performance. Similar to a dissertation committee, a committee of faculty members works closely with each student to hone their research questions, ask questions of their own, provide feedback and support, and help direct the student toward opportunities after they graduate. Many Bennington students go on to graduate school to continue and deepen their research pursuits. It is an innovative, rigorous, and inquiry-driven approach to undergraduate studies, and the students I spoke to were extremely excited about the projects they had embarked upon. The type of student most likely to succeed at Bennington is someone who is, or aspires to be, self driven in their intellectual pursuits, who does not expect a uniform or cookie-cutter design to their program of study. Students enrolling at Bennington don't necessarily need to be natural leaders among their peers, but they do need to be community minded. Bennington students are generally oriented toward helping to make the world a better place, and are people seeking to use their educational experiences to make a difference. Today marked the first annual Summer Programs Symposium at Barnard College, an opportunity for students to present original faculty-mentored research and reflect on internships and leadership engagements from this past summer. Represented across the day were initiatives supported by the Laidlaw Foundation, Bridgewater Associates, and GRoW @ Annenberg. Three key takeaways from impressive presentations from students:1) The transformative potential of research and experiential educational opportunities completed in the first half of an undergraduate experience: students in their first and second year of college grow tremendously, not only because of their early engagement in scholarship across disciplines, but also because of the relationships with mentors among faculty, staff, alums, professionals in the field — and (the most underrated) — with fellow students.2) The power of collaborations with external partners that understand the importance of giving time and resources for students to grow and learn at their own pace: we're lucky to have the support of Laidlaw, Bridgewater, and GRoW @ Annenberg, who all designed programs that allow students flexibility to determine their own path.3) The value of deep and intentional faculty/staff collaborations in the creation of campus programs. I can't imagine embarking on these efforts without faculty leaders like Sharon Harrison, Rebecca Wright, Daniela De Silva, Rajiv Sethi, Paul Scolieri, and Joan Snitzer — nor without staff at Beyond Barnard, the Athena Center for Leadership at Barnard College, and across campus. From the beginning, these initiatives were designed to require faculty/staff integration —and it makes a tremendous difference in the execution of meaningful programs. Thanks to everyone for a fantastic summer, and a great day! There's a lot to be learned from your hard work and creativity in the facilitation of these opportunities.

VSAC's Aspirations Project works with educators and school leaders to build school capacity to ensure that every student graduates with a plan. As part of Aspirations, the Harwood Union High School counseling and Next Step teams collaborated to create Pathways, a program specifically for students who identify as First Gen (students whose parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree). Harwood's Pathways program was built around data that indicates that first generation students access post high school education and training at lower rates than other students. The program provides equitable support and encouragement to First Gen students to identify and achieve their goals.First Gen students were invited to a kick-off lunch, featuring local food catered by Mad Taco. Students were introduced to the program, which allows them to earn “points” toward a gift card to a local business by participating in any of a variety of “future exploration activities” such as internships, career labs, field trips, attending the career and tech center, meeting with their school counselor, and more. Here, Pathways creators Maggie Weintraub, school counselor, and Rachael Potts, Next Step, pose with some of Harwood's First Gen adults, Harwood Superintendent Michael Leichliter and Social Studies teacher Matt Henchen. #aspirations #pathways #firstgeneration #firstgen #graduation #training #college #careerplanning
