ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan coach Sherrone Moore says he looks forward to the release of his text messages with Connor Stalions, the former low-level recruiting staffer who resigned amid a sign-stealing scandal. Moore spoke with reporters on Tuesday for the first time since the NCAA alleged he violated rules. The allegations were included in a confidential notice that the governing body sent to the school. Two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said Moore has been accused of deleting text message exchanges with Stalions. Moore has said he will continue to cooperate with the NCAA in its investigation.
UNDATED (AP) — Georgia is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll for the second straight year. The Bulldogs received 46 first-place votes to finish comfortably ahead of No. 2 Ohio State, which got 15 top votes. Oregon is No. 3 while Texas is fourth and Alabama is fifth. Conference realignment created an unprecedented preseason poll with just four conferences represented: The SEC has nine ranked teams. The Big Ten has six, the Big 12 has five and the ACC has four. Notre Dame, an independent, is ranked seventh.
UNDATED (AP) — The preseason AP Top 25 is — to some degree — a projection for the season to come. So with the College Football Playoff field about to triple in size from four to 12 teams, how will the preseason poll do as a playoff predictor? To get an idea, AP compared the preseason rankings from 2014-23 to the final CFP rankings from those years — the ones that set the matchups for the semifinals and other New Year’s Six bowls.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 2 Ohio State has extended its record streak of appearances in the AP Top 25 preseason college football rankings to 36 straight seasons. No. 6 Mississippi has its best preseason ranking since Archie Manning was the Rebels' quarterback. The preseason poll is full of tidbits for every team. No. 5 Alabama and No. 14 Clemson have their lowest preseason rankings in some time. No. 1 Georgia is marking its third appearance atop the preseason poll.
UNDATED (AP) — A Big Ten championship race that has gone through Ohio State and Michigan most years is about to veer left, all the way to the West Coast. The Oregon Ducks are primed to make the grandest entrance of the four former Pac-12 teams joining the league. Expect them to disrupt the buttoned-up tradition of college sports’ oldest conference with all their flash and panache. In a league where Ohio State-Michigan usually is the game of the year, the buzz entering this season is about the Ohio State-Oregon game in Eugene on Oct. 14.
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona and UCLA will continue their basketball rivalry with three games over the next four years, starting with a Dec. 14 matchup in downtown Phoenix. The teams also agreed to meet in 2025 at the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas and in 2027 in Los Angeles. Arizona and UCLA were conference rivals for years in the Pac-12, but the recent exodus from the conference has split them apart. Arizona is now in the Big 12 and UCLA is a part of the Big Ten. The teams have played 113 times, with the Bruins holding a 63-50 advantage.
NEW YORK (AP) — Matthew Forbes won the USTA 18-under singles boys national title to earn a spot in the U.S. Open later this month. If Forbes enrolls as planned for his freshman year at Michigan State, he can’t cash in on the minimum of $100,000 in prize money from the Grand Slam tennis tournament. Forbes beat Jack Kennedy in a four-set match on Sunday to get a wild-card entry into an event with a record total of $75 million in compensation. NCAA rules limit Forbes to actual and necessary expenses such as meals, lodging, coaching and equipment.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The University of Maryland has extended the contract of athletic director Damon Evans through June 2029. Evans took over as athletic director in 2018. The Terrapins have won three national titles since then — in men’s soccer, women’s lacrosse and men’s lacrosse. The football team has won bowl games in three straight years for the first time in program history. Evans hired Mike Locksley to coach the football team in 2018 and he’s still at the helm. Evans also brought in Kevin Willard as the new men’s basketball coach before the 2022-23 season.
